Girlguiding Burton’s trip to Italy 2010
On Friday the 30th of July 8 girls and 2 leaders from Burton on Trent, set out on the great guide getaway to Italy, the girls had been selected from various units in the town after an exciting selection weekend. After 26 hours on the coach we finally arrived at Villeneuve in the late afternoon.
On Sunday the girls spent the day at the lake, canoeing, raft building and kayaking. The girls played games on the water and even had a wrestling match on top of an upturned canoe. To our surprise all of the rafts remained intact after a trip on the water.
On the Monday we drove up into the mountains for the day, everyone had the chance to abseil down a high cliff face, go hill walk and bouldering (climbing on large rocks).
On the Tuesday we went up into the mountains again and everyone got the chance to try squeezing (through small gaps between rocks), climbing and walking. We finished off the activities with a well deserved ice cream.
Wednesday was our mountain top moment from the trip; we were literally on top of the world with an excursion up Mount Blanc in the cable cars. Whilst at the top 5 of the girls made their promise as senior section members, and Libby received her Baden Powell award.
Thursday saw another highlight of our trip when we all went white water rafting, none of the group had ever tried this before and after 2 trips down the grade 2 river in the morning we spent the afternoon on grade 3 water.
Friday was our last day in Italy, we visited Villeneuve the local town before packing and getting back on the coach to travel back to the UK.
We got to visit many areas in the Mountainous Aosta Valley in the north of Italy, and the chance to experience lots of adventurous activities in the different areas. The girls got to meet other girls from across the country, making friends from Scotland, Leicestershire and Wales who were on the same camp site as us. This certainly was a fabulous way to celebrate the centenary year and enjoy an international experience.
